Description : This is our antique reproduction chess set of the Edinburgh Upright that was produced in the mid 19th century. There were numerous variations of this general chess set design produced over the years with other names such as the Northern Upright. We believe this is the most elegant and attractive of the various designs. The Edinburgh Upright prominently features large, straight colums on all of its pieces, thus the likely origin of its name. This beautiful recreation is produced in boxwood with a black and ivory high gloss finish, though the original sets were most often made in ivory, which of course is no longer an option. These pieces are heavily weighted and have an amazing stability on the chess board making them wonderful to play with. The king has an urn shaped head while the queen has a perfectly round, knobbed shaped head, both with small pointed finials. The knights are carved with intricate detail and the bishop has a large, gapping miter that is uniqely attractive. This chess set makes a beautiful display and will impress any chess connoisseur with its unique and beautiful design and quality of the craftsmanship. Description : Our St George antique reproduction chess set originates from the early 1800s and was named after the St. George Chess Club in England. This particular pattern and many very similar to it, were commonly used for chess including competitive play during the 19th century. Several companies produced this chess set in a variety of materials, sizes, and designs. We chose this particular pattern because of the overall beauty of the profile and the handsome knights. As one would imagine, these pieces require a great deal of careful turning to reproduce the shape and detail in its original form. Playing chess will take on an extra charm and sense of nostalgia as you move the pieces and the game unfolds. The boxwood pieces are stained to create the aged patina of old boxwood that naturally darkens over time. John Calvert, a Master at the Worshipful Company of Turners, is generally credited with this design.
